Our Verdict

Delivering a decent set up of results in the bulk of our tests, the bagless Eureka PowerSpeed impressed usa more than we thought information technology would — particularly given its well below average price tag. Information technology provides good performance on carpets and is excellent at picking upwards pet hair, all while beingness adequately convenient and like shooting fish in a barrel to utilize. Information technology also comes with several accessories, including an upholstery tool, dusting castor, and crevice tool. That said, we did find that this vacuum struggled a bit with hard floors, so it might not be the best option if you primarily accept laminate/vinyl/tile floors in your firm.

Carpet Cleaning

First and foremost, we began by ranking and scoring how the PowerSpeed did at cleaning carpets, using 4 different types of messes on both depression-pile and medium-pile carpet. We spread out a known corporeality of mess for each test, and then compared the amount of mess left behind and the number of passes information technology took for each vacuum to make clean to determine scores. The PowerSpeed did decently well, earning a score just above boilerplate overall.

With rice, the PowerSpeed performed much meliorate on flatter carpeting than fluffier rug. It took almost three passes for this vacuum to clean up all of the grains from the low-pile carpet, with only a small amount of dust and a few fragments of rice left behind. However, we had to vacuum a little on the slower side to keep it from flinging rice everywhere. The functioning dropped a fleck with a medium-pile carpet, with a noticeable amount of rice remaining even after six passes.

This vacuum did just a bit worse with the flour exam, delivering lackluster results overall. We gave the PowerSpeed 10 passes on the low-pile rug and in that location was nonetheless enough of the ½ cup of flour that we spread out remaining. It was like with the medium-pile carpet, though we remember the PowerSpeed collected slightly more than than on the flat carpet.

Flour spread out and ready for our tests.

The PowerSpeed improved with our cereal test, delivering a great operation on depression-pile carpet. It picked upwardly the bulk of our Cheerios on the offset cleaning pass, then took a subsequent three to collect whatsoever of the fragments or other pieces from crushing the Cheerios. Notwithstanding, y'all again accept to vacuum relatively slowly to get the all-time cleaning performance. With fluffier carpet, the PowerSpeed struggled to excerpt Cheerios from deep within the piles even after multiple passes.

With slower movements and a lower pile carpeting, the PowerSpeed was able to handle our Cheerio test quite well. Higher pile carpet was more hard for information technology.

The PowerSpeed wrapped up this metric with another and so-so set of results in our oat cleaning challenge. It eventually cleaned up near 99% of the oats that nosotros spread out on both types of carpet but it took a ton of fourth dimension to become at that place — 8-10 passes in total.

Ease of Utilize

For our ease of use metric, we evaluated and scored the amount of effort it took to switch between different floor cleaning modes, the audio levels and the effective reach of each vacuum, and how well they cleaned along walls, in corners, and under furniture.

The PowerSpeed has a knob on top of the base of the vacuum that you lot plough to bandy betwixt hard and soft floors. Nosotros found this to exist a bit of a hurting whenever we were cleaning a house that had a mix of floors, as it is much more of a hassle to be constantly bending over to plow the knob than the models that have a slide switch right on the handle.

Having to reach down and turn the knob to change between different...

That said, this vacuum does a decent task of cleaning right upward along the edges of a room, both when vacuuming along the border and straight at the wall. It struggled a little bit in corners, leaving some mess behind. This vacuum as well isn't the best at cleaning nether article of furniture, only able to reach about 7" nether our test sofa. This vacuum also doesn't have the longest reach, only able to clean a maximum of 25' from the outlet, compared to the 35'+ of some of the premium vacuums.

This vacuum doesn't reach too far under low pieces of furniture.

This vacuum doesn't reach too far under depression pieces of furniture.

We also found the PowerSpeed to be a scrap on the louder side, measuring in at 76 dBa. There were louder vacuums in our lineup, but virtually were quieter.

Handling

For our handling metric, we scored the PowerSpeed on its maneuverability, how well information technology cleaned stairs, and how easy it was to push button or pull across dissimilar types of floor.

While this vacuum cleaner doesn't have a particularly long reach with the hose, nosotros do like how calorie-free it is. The PowerSpeed weighs just a tiny bit more than 10 pounds, making information technology much lighter than the majority of the vacuums we tested — and much easier to booty upwards or down stairs as well.

Unfortunately, this vacuum also has a bit of a box-shaped brush whorl housing and doesn't have any sort of hinge steering, making it less agile than some of its competitors.

The lack of swivel steering makes this vacuum a little harder to use.

Hard Surface Cleaning

We resumed rating and ranking the cleaning functioning of each vacuum for this metric, now focusing on hard floors. For this serial of tests, we used a section of forest laminate floor with the same four types of messes equally our rug cleaning metric. Regrettably, the PowerSpeed didn't practice particularly well here.

This vacuum does a decent chore at cleaning up rice from hard floors when the mess was minor but it tended to fling rice everywhere if we vacuumed besides quickly or encountered a larger pile of the rice. It fared even worse when it came to oats, forcing us to make a plethora of cleaning passes to effectively remove all the mess equally it got and then spread out.

This vacuum connected its poor performance with our Cheerios examination. It tended to vanquish apart the cereal and exit plenty of dust behind or throw the Cheerios every which style. On a few occasions, we felt that this vacuum made more mess than we originally started with.

The PowerSpeed also didn't practise very well with flour. It left behind plenty of streaks of flour even after multiple cleaning passes and never failed to eliminate the sparse movie across the surface of the boards. It besides left backside plenty of flour in the cracks between the planks, especially when vacuuming perpendicular to them.

Pet Hair

Our last ready of tests scored the operation in regards to picking up pet hair. To do this, we spread out a measured corporeality of pet hair on fluffy carpet and worked it into the fibers, then vacuumed and measured the corporeality successfully nerveless. The PowerSpeed redeemed itself in this concluding examination, earning one of the better scores of the grouping and collecting essentially all of the pet hair — around 99%.

Value

Overall, we think the PowerSpeed is a decent value, offering an average functioning at a below-average price.

Conclusion

If you lot are shopping on a tighter budget for an upright vacuum, then the Eureka PowerSpeed might be the perfect option for you. It offers surprisingly practiced results when it comes to picking up pet pilus and does decently well at cleaning up other types of messes from carpeting. It's lightweight and fairly user-friendly to use, though information technology does struggle with hard floors. We definitely wouldn't recommend ownership this if you lot aren't using it on carpet most of the time only it'south a fair choice if you are generally merely cleaning carpet and shopping on a budget.
